How To Decorate Your Fish Tank For Halloween
I have made a list of some fish safe ideas you can incorporate to your fish tank to get the spooky effects of your tank to match the rest of your house Halloween decorations.
Always use aquarium-safe materials that are non-toxic, such as resin or ceramic, and avoid materials or items with flaking paints or metal (corrosive). Also, check for any sharp edges that could potentially tear fish fins or injure your fish.

DIY Ideas
You can use rocks/driftwood/Legos and some superglue to make the scariest of figures and faces. Make sure the Legos are cleaned before adding them to your tank. If the driftwood is new, it will have some trouble staying down. Make sure to secure it to a rock or something to keep your driftwood from floating up.
Store Bought Items
At your local pet shop or online, you should find some great spooky-themed items on display that you can pop into your tank. Make sure to rinse them before adding them to your tank to ensure they are free of dust or contaminants.
Background Scene Change
Having a removable backing paper for your aquarium is a great way to customize your tank for different times of the year. You can look online or make your own backing paper to increase the spooky and scary vibe of your fish tank.
Lights
If you want to create a spooky look in your tank, lights can help a lot. You can change your night lights to orange or red, depending on your light features. You can also add additional aquarium lights that can be submerged, highlighting signs or items placed within your tank.
Glass Decor
Another excellent option for adding extra decorations is using stickers on the glass. If you have smaller decor items, you can also find a way to secure them to the glass safely.
3D Prints
If you have a 3D printer or can find a nice 3D printed module online, you can safely add that to your tank. Please make sure the items haven’t been painted and there are no contaminants on them before you add them to your fish tank.
Draping
Using draping like spider webs or something similar over your tank, without touching the water, is another great way to increase the spookiness of your home aquarium.
Substrate
Substrate additions, like glowing rocks under certain light, can also add to the overall look. Many people prefer changing their aquarium substrate to a black substrate as it enhances the ornaments and spooky looks of their tanks.
Mist Maker
If you have a mist maker/humidifier or have been looking for an excuse to get one, now is a great time to do so. Make sure your machine is clean, free from oil, and contains only pure water. If you are concerned about oil, make sure to place the humidifier far enough away so that it won’t contaminate the fish tank water.
Methylene Blue Water Color Change
Methylene Blue is a good way to make your water a little darker temporarily, and it is suitable for your fish. Make sure to use the correct dosage for your tank. Making the water a darker blue hue will allow glowing items in your tank, as well as your GMO fish, to stand out a bit more.
