A Little More About Who We Are

  • Hello and welcome to Avocation360!

My name is Linda Strydom, and I’m excited to take you on this fishkeeping journey with me. It all began in 2022 when I bought my first aquarium and started raising fancy goldfish. What started as a simple hobby quickly grew into a passion that transformed my home and daily routine.
Those early days were filled with excitement and plenty of questions. I spent hours researching water parameters, learning about the nitrogen cycle, and figuring out proper feeding schedules. When my goldfish started laying eggs for the first time, I realized how little information existed for home breeders facing real situations. Most resources were either too technical or too basic, leaving a gap for everyday hobbyists like me.
That spawning experience changed everything. Watching tiny fry develop from eggs into swimming fish sparked something deeper. I wanted to understand every stage of their lifecycle, from courtship behavior to raising healthy juveniles. Through careful observation and plenty of trial and error, I learned what works in actual home aquariums, not just in theory.
My mission is straightforward: to inspire, educate, connect, and celebrate the joys and challenges of keeping fancy goldfish. Whether you’re an experienced breeder or just starting with your first tank, I’m here to be your guide. I provide honest advice based on real experiences, practical resources that solve common problems, and a welcoming sense of community.

What We Want To Deliver To You

01

I’d Like To Share My Experience

I created this platform to share my experiences with keeping and breeding fancy goldfish while providing helpful information about issues I encountered and questions I had when I first started. The challenges I faced as a beginner, from cloudy water to unexpected fish diseases, taught me valuable lessons that can save you time, money, and frustration.
My approach focuses on practical solutions that work in home environments. You won’t find complicated chemistry formulas or equipment that costs thousands of dollars. Instead, I share methods that regular hobbyists can implement with standard aquarium supplies and reasonable budgets. When problems arise, I explain multiple solutions so you can choose what fits your situation.

A Passion For Fish

I love watching my goldfish, each with their own personality shining through during feeding time, social interactions, and daily activities. The babies are adorable as they grow, and naming them based on their developing personalities and physical traits adds a personal connection to the breeding process.
This passion extends to understanding goldfish biology, behavior, and genetics. I study how different varieties develop their characteristic features, which breeding pairs produce the best offspring, and how environmental factors affect growth and coloration. Sharing this knowledge helps other enthusiasts appreciate the complexity and beauty of fancy goldfish.

Connecting With You

I would love to hear your questions, success stories, and any helpful tips or ideas you may have. Let’s create a community where we share information, support each other through challenges, and celebrate the joys of fishkeeping together. Your feedback helps me understand what topics to cover next and ensures the content stays relevant to real hobbyists.
Whether you’re troubleshooting a water quality issue, planning your first breeding attempt, or simply enjoying the peaceful hobby of watching fish, this community welcomes you. Together, we can learn from each other’s experiences and grow as fishkeepers.

My Goldfish Breeding Journey

From that first tank in 2022, my setup has grown to include multiple breeding tanks, grow out aquariums for juvenile fish, and specialized equipment for maintaining optimal water quality. I’ve learned to recognize breeding behavior, prepare spawning mops, and create the right conditions that trigger goldfish to reproduce naturally.

Each breeding season brings new lessons. I’ve dealt with fungus on eggs, learned the importance of separating adults from fry, and discovered which foods promote the best growth rates in young goldfish. My hands on experience includes managing everything from basic filtration systems to more advanced techniques like culling for quality and maintaining genetic diversity in my breeding lines.

Today, I supply healthy fancy goldfish to local pet shops and specialty aquarium stores. This commercial aspect taught me the importance of consistent quality, proper quarantine procedures, and the difference between hobby breeding and running a sustainable operation. The standards I maintain for my commercial stock are the same standards I share in my articles.

The Fish That Started It All

My original four goldfish each developed distinct personalities that made me fall in love with the species. Some are bold and swim to the front of the tank during feeding time, while others are more cautious and prefer exploring decorations and plants. Watching their individual behaviors and social interactions taught me that goldfish are far more intelligent and interesting than most people realize.

The babies from my first successful spawn were incredibly rewarding to raise. Each one developed unique color patterns and body shapes as they matured. Naming them based on their evolving traits became a fun way to track their growth and remember which fish came from which spawn. Some developed the chunky body shape characteristic of quality fancy goldfish, while others showed the graceful finnage that makes varieties like fantails and orandas so popular.

These personal connections to my fish drive the content I create. When I write about proper nutrition, I’m thinking about keeping my own goldfish vibrant and healthy. When I discuss tank maintenance, I’m sharing the exact routines that keep my breeding tanks running smoothly. Every article reflects what actually works in my fishroom.
